Research

My examination of Canada’s past emphasizes the experiences of ordinary people, but it also recognizes the important roles played by government, and by cultural authorities such as business, the media, and organized religion. Through analyzing institutions and social practices that Canadians often take for granted, my research highlights the diverse range of  people who have shaped Canada’s history and national identity—often in unexpected and unintended ways. My work contributes to scholarship on Canadian social, cultural, and environmental history in particular.
